2022 Tia M.M. Hegstad

 Tia M.M. Hegstad

from Edinburgh, Scotland, currently living in Moss, Norway.

My entry this year is inspired by the beautiful artwork of Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh, entitled Summer, 1894.

I love the Art Nouveau style, and wanted to find something Scottish to base my piece on.  Charles Rennie MacIntosh came to mind first, but then I found some lovely pieces by Margaret and fell in love with this one.

I used nuno felting for the background, then added crochet, embroidered and appliqued details to complete my entry.

Edinburgh Castle

As soon as I saw this year's theme, I knew I had to do Edinburgh Castle, as it symbolizes home for me.  I was going to do a fireworks display in the night sky, as this brings back fond memories of both the Festival and Hogmanay, but my Mum shared a photo with me which made me change my mind.  It was of the laser rainbow beamed from the castle that lit up the sky in March.  I was unfortunately not able to travel home to see it, but I've always loved rainbows, so I was able to combine two of my favourite things.

I nuno felted the background, drew the castle on cotton, crocheted trees for the foreground (first time doing popcorn stitch) and used embroidery thread for the laser.  It came together nicely, even though I ended up doing the nuno felting twice because I wanted a black background for the trees instead of the navy I used the first time.

All I could think of when I heard the theme for this year, brilliance, was diamonds.  I love the way prisms and crystals catch the light and radiate different colours, so I decided to make my paper pieced diamond (my own design) colourful.  The flames from within are bursting out from the top of the diamond, and I found some lovely sequins and crystals in my stash which I used to embellish them.  The background fabric was one I was given that I never thought I'd find a use for, due to the gold flecks, but I think it works well here.

I woke up at 2.48 am on Tuesday the 7th of April and came up with the first line of my poem- that's why the moon was shining.  I'd written the rest by 2.56 am.

My Project Journey

Idea sparking,
Ember glowing,
Flame igniting,
Brilliance forming.

Machine sewing,
Fabric joining,
Crochet stitching,
Shape appearing.

Artwork framing,
Diamond glinting,
Flames burning,
Brilliance growing.

Moon shining,
Corona threatening,
Hand writing,
Poem flowing.

Completion.

I chose  the theme weather because Scotland is famous for having a lot.

My piece is based on the phrase “If you don’t like the weather, wait 10 minutes.”

This year I decided only to scrumble, and I found it relaxing and fun once things started coming together.

It starts with a blue sky, sunny day, which rapidly moves onto sunshine and showers, luckily with a beautiful rainbow.

Things then progress to a thunderstorm, and then a wee shower of snow.

I made some glass buttons to represent puddles from the rain shower. One has a copper leaf embedded in it, and 3 others have CZ crystals.
