Blooming Colourwheel

I liked this years theme because I love colour.  The first thing I did was make some lampwork buttons on a course in Edinburgh with my friend Helen Chalmers.  I still didn't know what I was going to make at that point, but felt it was a good start.  They ended up being the centres of the flowers.

It was fun going through my boxes of wool and fabric digging out colours to use.  The more the merrier, as far as I'm concerned, but I quickly decided on 6 main segments.

Two of the segments are made from paper piecing, a patchwork technique I first tried last year.  One is made from knitting, and I taught myself to do short rows for this.  The other 3 sections are freeform crochet.

I liked the wheel as it was, but felt it needed more detail, so I started freeform crocheting leaves and flowers.  These were sewn and needle felted onto the background in curved lines from the centre to the outside edge of each colour segment.  My kitten, Rufus, showed a great deal of interest when I was trying to attach all the flowers, but he sleeps quite a lot so I managed to get them all in place eventually.

Banded Agates

I have always loved collecting stones and rocks from the beach and at mineral fairs, and find the structures of semi precious stones very attractive.  One of my favourites is banded agates.  

For this project I used crochet, couching by machine and marbling on fabric to make the agate slices.  These are needle felted and sewn onto a wet felted background, based on the beautiful marble Scotsman Steps in Edinburgh, which I walked down last time I was home, in April.  

I went to a nearby beach here in Moss to find a nice real stone background for the photo.

I enjoyed this year’s challenge, and hope that everyone else did too.  I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s projects.

The ferocious Scottish wildcat,

The majestic red deer doe,

The playful river otter

And the owl with eyes aglow.

The tenacious west coast midgie,

The horned heilan coo,

Nessie hiding in the depths,

Hill haggis hiding too.

The heron standing fishing,

The frog ready to leap,

The beaver shoring up his lodge

And adders on the heath.

Lots of different beasties, 

Flowers, trees and plants,

The nature of my homeland,

Kept lush by rain in slants.

I have never been out on the open ocean, but I’ve always loved the coast, beaches and beach combing.  I still like looking for fancy shells and nice stones, and investigating rock pools.

My challenge entry this year therefore depicts  the Scottish west coast, where I spent most of my holidays as a child.  There are beautiful beaches and the sea can be a marvellous aqua colour.  I still love going back to the same places, but hate leaving them again.

Moonlit Meadow

I chose to use blue for my challenge piece, because it has always been my favourite colour.  This time I combined a nuno felted background, with crochet details that I needle felted in place.  I enjoyed making this, and am pleased with the result.

One of my cats, Maisie, made it quite difficult to make this wallhanging.  Whether it was on a table for me to look at while deciding the next step, or on my desk ready for needlefelting, she took to sitting in the middle and curling up for a wee cat nap.  She has long fur, and she’s lucky I didn’t accidentally needle felt her tail into the flower bed.  I couldn’t have done that, because she’s grey, not blue, so I pushed her tail gently out of the way and worked around her.

I first saw a picture of "October", by James Jaques Joseph Tissot, in a magazine when I was at school. I fell in love with the painting then, and still adore it.

To make my version, I started by nuno felting the background. Then I crocheted the leaves and the ladies skirt, which I needle-felted in place. To get the pattern on the jacket I used fabric pens. I also used a fabric pen to draw her face. Her underskirt is made from old lace, which I bought at an antique fair when I was at school and, amazingly, managed to find when I needed it. Her hat is made from fake suede, with one layer of lace and one of net to make the crown. Her boots are leather. The deer in the background are made from wool yarn, which I needle felted in place. It was a fun project to make, and I am happy with the result.

One day I would like to see the real painting, as I'm sure it's stunning in real life.

One of my primary school teachers read The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe to us, and finished at the most critical point when the bell rang for us to go home on the Friday. My Mum kindly bought me the book the next day, because I couldn’t wait till Monday to find out what happened.

The Chronicles of Narnia became my favourite books, and for several years, like many other children, I tried every wardrobe I came across trying to find a way to get there

I used nuno felting, crochet, knitting, needle felting, and devoré, a new technique for me, which I learned at a craft fair in March this year. I found a nice Swarovski crystal for the light in the lamp post. It was fun putting it all together.

I had trouble deciding what to do for this theme, but eventually came up with an idea I liked, which I think works.

I nuno felted a world on cotton gauze, and used freeform crochet to make a frame. The navy ring represents a starry sky. The colourful border represents my world, which I think of as being chaotic, disorganised and stressful at times, but never dull.

I wanted to include photos that represent some of the different things that keep me grounded and give my life meaning, the things that are most important in my world, like family and hobbies. Though it isn’t one of my current hobbies, I was inspired to give the project a scrapbooking feel, so I arranged photos I have taken, copied them onto fabric, made labels, and crocheted borders for them. I have only included my current pets, to save space, not because they aren’t all important to me. Similarly, I have only included some of my family.

I hope everyone enjoyed making their project as much as I enjoyed making mine.
