BRILLIANCE - THE FIRE WITHIN

100% Blue Faced Leicester hand dyed and hand spun.
95% Merino with 5% stelena

Fingerless gloves.

Making fingerless gloves was a challenge I was set a few years ago for me. At the time I thought it would be an impossible task.

As years have passed I have made many pairs. Each pair is still a challenge. These are out of my comfort zone using a rainbow mix of bright colours. These are also the first pair that I have made including freeform knitting with crochet.

It was following the "fire within" that I even started playing with freeform. Continuing to follow the "fire within" who knows what what can be achieved.

All I could think of when I heard the theme for this year, brilliance, was diamonds.  I love the way prisms and crystals catch the light and radiate different colours, so I decided to make my paper pieced diamond (my own design) colourful.  The flames from within are bursting out from the top of the diamond, and I found some lovely sequins and crystals in my stash which I used to embellish them.  The background fabric was one I was given that I never thought I'd find a use for, due to the gold flecks, but I think it works well here.

I woke up at 2.48 am on Tuesday the 7th of April and came up with the first line of my poem- that's why the moon was shining.  I'd written the rest by 2.56 am.

My Project Journey

Idea sparking,
Ember glowing,
Flame igniting,
Brilliance forming.

Machine sewing,
Fabric joining,
Crochet stitching,
Shape appearing.

Artwork framing,
Diamond glinting,
Flames burning,
Brilliance growing.

Moon shining,
Corona threatening,
Hand writing,
Poem flowing.

Completion.

Rainbow of Hope

"Without the rain there would be no rainbows."

I had thought of lots of different things to do to fit this year's challenge, but in the light of what has been happening in the world, this symbol of hope for the future seemed to be the only one to choose.  (I am sure I will not be the only one to choose a rainbow)

The rainbow reflects future brightness and the light within reflects our determination to survive and hopefully make the world a better place.

I made my rainbow 46cm wide, and have hung it in my front window.

The Queen of the Moonlight

I spin the silverthreads of the bluewhite nature

Blue is the sky
Blue are the eyes
Blue are the lakes
reflecting the blue sky

White are the blankets of snow
White are the summer nights
White are the clouds, sheeps of the blue sky

Crucible

As I trap layers of freeform crochet and eco dyed scrap materials between a stabiliser that ultimately dissolves, never to be seen again, I unconsciously make visual the cycle of loss, fragmentation and the threads that somehow hold us together.

Fragments, scribbled stitch, odd shapes, the seepage of light (interior light) through the gaps - I am only now beginning to realise what it all means.

It is a lost map, a fragile crucible, the intangible becoming tangible. And I have no idea where this journey will lead me.

Materials - silk crochet; naturally dyed silk fabric, teabag paper and yarn; free motion machine stitched.

The Brilliance in my piece is the snowdrops which come through in our front garden in the New Year.

The Abyss

The chaos of my creativity seeps outward from The Abyss, a pit filled with all my life experiences and feelings.

The center of darkness, like the birthplace of diamonds, fills with pressure and sends both waves and sinuous arms to the conscious world to become manifest.

The fire within always burns with smoldering angst, smoky shadows, and fiery outbursts.

(Translation: My creative inspiration comes from my life which had some hard times.)
