The instant I read this years theme I knew what I was going to do.
Coral Reef, " hyperbolic"  mathematical crochet.
I have always loved it but never felt it fit the theme so well in other years.
Patterns in Nature is a perfect match.
I'm hoping to see others used this idea also.
I plan to keep adding pieces to this and find a large aquarium to display them in.

Flora—from the Heart of Florida

Living in Florida I knew from when this flora/fauna them was announced I wanted to depict the citrus fruit of
Florida. It is abundant and beautiful. I wasn’t just sure how, and had to think on it a while.

I began gathering the luscious yarns. They sang to me of the different varieties of citrus. When I saw the wooden heart shape, I immediately knew it would be the “heart of Florida”. It was a  joy to create.

I was working on my peach color challenge piece and I had no clue what it would be, I had a pile of scrumbles made, I was being busy. I really wasn't that happy or enthused with it, but I was committed and planned to stay with it. My daughter lent me the movie ‘Frozen’ to watch while I was working on the peach, that was all it took to make me stray...I could just clearly envision what I would make and when the movie was over I went to my white yarn tote and there it was, all curled up waiting to hop on my crochet hooks. It was like magic.
FROZEN is a 10" by 20" wall hanging mounted on canvas.
Hear me singing, "the cold never bothered me any way."

            Mother Earth of mine,

            Mother of my Earth,

I bow down to you greatness,

            Your beauty, and your grace.

            Humble, I stand before you.

            You always meet my needs.

How could I ever harm you?

            Eternally, you plant the seeds.

            The seasons swirl around us

            Like comets in the wind.

            You give your greatest glory;

            Love that knows no end.

            I always do respect you

            And learn from your charms.

Keeping my life great for you,

Because you hold me in your arms.

            Mother Sun is your redeemer.

Brother wind is at your back.

All your beauty is before us,

There is nothing we can lack.

Van Gogh, and more explicitly his Starry Night Painting is the art that inspired me. Don McLean's Starry Night music--a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh is the music. They go hand in hand for me. Don sings of swirling clouds in violet hues and of Vincent's eye's china blue. Vincent suffered for his sanity and that suffering and truth is reflected in his paintings.

I do not suffer...and my sanity seems intact...but, when I step outside the box to do free form, I do understand what the artist has to stand up for....and how he feels he wants to create and move forward no matter who may laugh at the ideas.

The Johnny Appleseed Freeform Memorial.

I was working on an apple colorway for a totally different project and I was enjoying it so much I wondered HOW I could incorporate it into the 2011 Challenge?
It dawned on me that we have an American myth/folk hero begging me to use apple colors to build a monument to him.
Johnny Appleseed : (John Chapman-Sept 26 1774 - March 18 1845).
Johnny was an American pioneer who died a little over 100 years before I was born. Johnny grew apple trees and supplied seeds to the pioneers. Appleseed gave away, and sold, many trees. He owned many tree nurseries in the North, and although he was successful with his trees, Appleseed lived a simple life.
He was a vegetarian, wore raggedy clothes, and was a very religious man. Legend has it Johnny traveled wearing his cooking pot on his head as a hat. He was an extremely colorful man! Many stories, songs and movies tell his tall tales.

Winter was gloomy and unseasonably cold

It made me feel tired and empty and old

I struggled and muttered and fiddled and puttered

Not a purl or a treble seemed right
Not a yarn in my color way was looking so bright

Then the Challenge was called and I perked up my ears
Somewhere in My World is the theme for this year
I grabbed up a basket and started to choose
By textures and colors by shade  and by hue
Pinks, greens, yellows and heavenly blues

I started to chain and to bullion and such
My mood it was suddenly changing so much
My face lit up with a smile --scrumbling had not been fun for a while
They blossomed like springtime with a plan of their own
As happens when you freeform in the zone

In my world- grew a pastel delight
All things about it seem pleasantly right
It has no name or no reason -- but it does fit the season
Of springtime in bloom and it brightens my room
I'm so happy to give you a look, here on the page of this book.

"I started Gypsy Wings last year at Becky's house.

I found the fantastic shades of grey yarns in a sale bin.

A passion was born.
I saw it as a pillow. It evolved.

The Gypsy Wings grew to 50' diameter.

Now ,through my eyes, it is love, because it is the most loved

sleeping spot of both of my cats."
