Butterfly Woman Dances with Her Shadow

My husband, Jim Findlay, is a jazz musician and composer, who is deeply influenced by flamenco. And, because he practices for hours every day, his music is woven into the fiber art that I make. His piece 'Spanish Light' inspired me to create 'Butterfly Woman Dances with Her Shadow'.

For many years, I have loved photographing 

shadows, and working with shadow imagery. 

This piece, which is one of a series of fiber art 

collages that I call 'Woven Women', is an 

exploration of shadows and light. 

The shadow is crocheted wire, and Butterfly 

Woman was woven with wool in tapestry, inkle 

and frame loom weaving techniques. Her necklace is a wooden circle with sewing thread tatted over it. She is approximately 23 inches/58 cm tall and 8 inches/20 cm wide at the widest point.

Sophia in Autumn. 

I recently read about seekers of wisdom approaching a window where the Goddess of Wisdom, Sophia, will reveal glimpses of herself. I have been contemplating how Sophia reveals herself in the different seasons of our lives. Autumn is the season in which my husband harvests hay, so the background of this piece is a woven square of baler twine. The foreground is copper wire that has been crocheted with bullion knots to represent the harvest, as well as being woven. There is a tiny figure on the lower left hand side, approaching Sophia. Sophia is carved and burned on wood. Tatted lace (in copper wire and cotton thread) embellishes the window. Wooden leaves hang below. Another image of Sophia is behind glass in the sky. Perhaps it is the moon, perhaps it is another aspect of wisdom and compassion.

Summer is the season that is the most fleeting in our part of the world, and is meant to be gloried in during it's brief visit. The foreground is copper wire that has been woven. Sophia wears a crown of simple crocheted flowers. She is carved and burned on wood. Crocheted copper wire flowers and leaves hang below. This homage to Sophia is a prayer for wisdom and compassion to blossom and unfold abundantly.

'Winter Flight' 

Winter Flight is a 'wall doll' that I made to honor some work that my son has been doing. The head is a piece of driftwood with the face burned on it. The body is woven copper wire and nylon cords. The arms are seaweed. The tail is crocheted copper wire embellished with a Maori seashell fishing hook. The heart is made of large steel fish hooks.

Spring Nesting

Spring Nesting is in honor of my daughter and her husband creating their new nest in the sweet little house they have just bought and are bringing back to life. My daughter loves birds. The head is a piece of driftwood that she saw as being a bird's head. That was the leaping off point for the piece. The arms are seaweed. The hat is crocheted copper wire. The wings and body are woven copper wire. The tail is crocheted copper wire. The heart is a citrine crystal.
