Meet Helga Weirdling!

Helga is a water creature of great antiquity and vastly unknown origins. I really don’t know where she came from.

The stitches, hooks and only my fingers decided what she would evolve into. I got to name her, though. Despite her mysterious past, she has become an important member of my freeform family.

Helga's evolution includes earthly materials such as fingering weight and sport weight yarns in wool, nylon, alpaca, and cotton blends.

Various crochet techniques and stitches were used as well as different hook sizes.

For this freeform project, I decided to make a scarf symbolizing my journey from creating projects from patterns to freeform stitchery, stitching without patterns.

I used fingering and lace weight yarns in various blends of fibers and colors from my stash. The stitches and hook sizes varied as I changed yarns. I also incorporated a teneriffe lace heart which I made the previous year using size 12 pearl cotton.

I enjoy the mystery element of freeform, never really knowing what the scrumbles or the finished project will look like. Freeform truly is liberating.
