And, fashion publications like Vogue have depended on fashion artwork to attract readers and to highlight the latest in style. This one hundred year history of Vogue artwork inspired this freeform celebration of beauty in fashion.

This year's challenge was very exciting for me because it allowed me to combine two of my passions, crochet and music. When the topic was announced, I had no trouble choosing my topic: interpreting Moonlight Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven. This song has always been one of my favorite classical pieces. It is a hauntingly beautiful piece; a contrast of light and dark, sorrow and hope. I tried to combine all of those elements into my freeform submission.

I first saw a picture of "October", by James Jaques Joseph Tissot, in a magazine when I was at school. I fell in love with the painting then, and still adore it.

To make my version, I started by nuno felting the background. Then I crocheted the leaves and the ladies skirt, which I needle-felted in place. To get the pattern on the jacket I used fabric pens. I also used a fabric pen to draw her face. Her underskirt is made from old lace, which I bought at an antique fair when I was at school and, amazingly, managed to find when I needed it. Her hat is made from fake suede, with one layer of lace and one of net to make the crown. Her boots are leather. The deer in the background are made from wool yarn, which I needle felted in place. It was a fun project to make, and I am happy with the result.

One day I would like to see the real painting, as I'm sure it's stunning in real life.

"The Skye Boat Song"

This piece was inspired when I visited the Isle of Skye in Scotland, and kept humming the haunting tune. I took lots of photos, and this was my interpretation of one of them. The words of the song tell the story of how Bonnie Prince Charlie escaped to the Isle of Skye after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. I also play in a large folk orchestra, and this is one of the lovely tunes we often perform and I thoroughly enjoy playing.

SECRET LADY

The inspiration for this 36x36 inch crocheted art piece is the Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt. In particular, his two portraits, The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, both painted circa 1907. I like his use of bold geometrics, both circles and blocks and as I started my project, his work came to mind. While my piece is not reminiscent of either a kiss or a portrait of a living person, I was moved to interpret his style with various shapes and colors. I gave my piece its name because the woman is hidden within a block-like structure and must be looked for, much as the man and woman in The Kiss are hidden in their robes and Adele Bloch-Bauer is hidden within the geometric pattern behind her.

The art piece is all crocheted using more than 30 colors and several different stitches/textures and hook sizes. The piece is attached to a 36x36 painted canvas and resides over my fireplace mantle.

Night Owl

Simplistic. Colourful. Contemporary.

This whimsical project was inspired by the abstract folk art paintings of Karla Gerard. Night Owl is a clever combination of Karla's primitive style with my own quirky flair, with the addition of my passion for using recycled materials.

Yarn scraps, old denim jeans, broken jewellery, a CD which has seen better days, and a few stripped electrical cables. Harmoniously blended to bring the Night Owl to life.

'like a wheel within a wheel'

Like a circle in a spiral

Like a wheel within a wheel

Never ending or beginning

On an ever spinning reel

As the images unwind

Like the circles that you find

In the windmills of your mind

Ever since the English version of 'les moulins de mon coeur' became popular after it was used as the theme song for the 1968 film 'The Thomas Crown Affair', it has always been one of those tunes that got stuck in my head whenever I heard it. I often found that it continued to run through my mind for days, often to the point of actually becoming quite annoying as I actually found myself walking along to the beat!

I had heard 'The Windmills of Your Mind' playing in a shop on the day before the challenge theme was announced...and so, as soon as music was mentioned as part of the theme, it just popped back into my brain again, and kept playing away every time I thought about what I might create ...and so I was forced to just go with the (circular) flow.
