A Snorkelers View

Snorkeling is great fun, and this is my snorkeling view of the seas around New Zealand.
As you look up from the bottom you glimpse the sun as shimmering ripples of light that penetrate the clear blue seas.

Some breakers overhead cause swirls of mini whirlpools that gently sway the fern-like
structures on the sea-bed.

Seaweed calmly drifts by with the current and it waves seductively at you as it continues
on with its dainty ballet dance.

The wall hanging is created with raw edge hand sewn applique.I used my own hand-dyed fabrics along with some commercial batiks. The embellishments are created with a variety of textured yarns and cotton threads.

The whole piece encompasses all of my hobbies and passions – swimming & snorkelling,
Free Form crochet, hand embroidery, and art quilts.

In January, shortly after this year's free-form theme was announced, I went to Carolina Beach, NC. I was seeking perfect shells and sea glass...and inspiration. Humming "Beyond the Sea...on golden sands..." I beach-combed for 3 days, finding no perfect shells or sea glass. Instead I found interesting shells, reshaped by sea-worms and surf; "nature's free-form" I thought. Inspired, I realized I was doing what I enjoyed to do most by the sea---beach-combing. I wanted to capture that feeling.

My creation is a depiction of the golden sands, with surf-worn shells captured in watery clear peyote bead bezels on free-formed swirls of bead-crochet "beach", topped by a bead-crocheted "starfish", with a necklace of crocheted shell-chips embellished with free-form peyote-beaded "sand" and with freely-moving, bead-loop "waves" beyond the "beach.

My freeform shawl is titled “Down By The Seaside”, inspired by the song by Led Zeppelin.

The body of the shawl is knit, the edging is crocheted, and the seaweed embellishments are both knit and crocheted, with yarn fringe detailing and real seashells.

I have lived in this southern California beach town for 46 years now, and before that I grew up near the Atlantic Ocean as a child. I have fond memories of the oceans and beaches from throughout my life.

My shawl was created with a wide variety of blue and green yarns, from vintage, commercial, and handspun yarns in my collection. I love combining colors and textures of fibers to create wearable garments inspired by the beauty of nature.

The Living Ocean

I have always been fascinated by the ocean, exploring the awe-inspiring universe of life beneath the ocean has been such a priceless experience, it's swarming with potential for both beauty and knowledge.

When the ocean is completely clear, you can see incredible limitless shapes, colours, textures of the underwater forms.

It's the process as much as the form that I enjoy and the love inspired my many.

I began doing freeform to work outside my comfort zone! Still working on that by utilizing new stiches and techniques.

This year I focused on mastering bullion stitches because they reminded me of ocean waves. (Bullions have been a five year journey inspired by the lovable Bonnie Pierce.)

This piece is dedicated to the fiber friendships in my life!

I have crocheted, knitted, sewn felt and made my own bead for the 'eye' of the fish out of polymer clay. I started with the beaded/felt part and ended with the fish. This is a scarf/cowl and the 'eye' of the fish acts as a button to keep the piece secured around the neck. I call my piece 'An ocean of fantasy'. It can be worn buttoned or wrapped around the neck.
