EARTH

Sense of solidity and substance. Source of chemical elements for the body which houses the soul. Receptacle for the water which bathes our cells. Center which collects the atmosphere from which we breathe in life and become living souls. Living, breathing earth.

WATER
Currents and tides and wavelets and eddies. Tsunamis and floods and bathtubs full of hot release.  Triune existence as liquid, solid, or vapor, changing freely from one form to another and back again with no change of its essential self. It cleanses and it kills. It soothes and it terrifies. Most changeable of elements, water constantly reminds us that life is perpetual change, that nature is raw and wild, even when we think we have her tamed.

FIRE

Purification. Transformation. Coexisting destruction and creation. The Phoenix cannot rise anew except from the ashes. The river of fire runs through all of creation.

AIR

Air is really invisible, but a whole lot of invisible joined together won't make a very impressive work of fiber art, so the next best thing is things the mind thinks of in association with air. Like soft fluffy clouds. With one tiny ray of golden sunshine peeking through at the edge. Clouds retrieve the water vapor we can’t see from the air we can’t see, to return it to us in usable form. Air is the laboratory in which many of these essential processes occur. Sort of like our souls. And just as easily ignored and polluted.

I am just getting started with freeform work after years of thinking, dreaming, stash-building and working with others' patterns. I'm not sure why this is so - I think there must be (for me, anyway) underlying issues of self-confidence or risk-taking. There's also the issue of actually using The Stash!

I could write a whole essay on that -- the mantra 'it's only yarn' is very helpful.
But never mind the psychology of freeforming and yarn hoarding -- this challenge was just plain fun! I loved gathering up a basket of yarn for each piece and contemplating the Elements.   While I had a general idea of what I wanted to do at the start, the final form of each piece evolved as I worked.
The best part of creating these pieces was what I learned from them.

Color is the inspiration for most everything I create; therefore when I thought of the elements certain colors immediately came to mind.

Earth – There are so many ways to have interpreted this but I chose to think of the earth from the inside out. I chose shades of browns, with small amounts of other colors, then used only single crochet to create an amorphous, swirling scrumble.

Water – This piece is a compilation of all the colors I have experienced here on the Texas Gulf Coast combined with my memories of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It was absolute serendipity that the finished piece resembles the shape of a fish.

Air – This made me think of the times when the air is visible – a foggy morning, stormy sky, high puffy clouds, and that brief time as night turns into day. The gold explosion in the middle reminds me of a star or a burst of lightening.

Fire – Hot…bright…uncontrollable. Those are some of the words that came to mind as I chose the fibers and put this scrumble together.

Fire. Thinking of hot and that flame goes up.

Air. Clouds in the sky. Dark clouds and light, fluffy and brisk.

Earth. We cultivate it. Care for it. Garden it. The pink is at the top left.

Water. Waves, constantly moving and refreshing.

I had no idea where my yarn or fingers would take me when I picked up a color of yarn to start scrumbling. I did not have a picture in my mind what I would make, just a feeling.. It is always exciting to see where I end up whether I am scrumbling, quilting, beading or even cooking. This challenge was especially difficult in that I thought we had to make something realistic…I just went with my emotions and let the color do the “talking”.

*Air* – sometimes threatening, welcoming, heavy, light and often bringing with it a range of unexpected delights.

*Water* – soul-refreshing Pacific Ocean (the view from our deck). White horses prancing, yacht defiantly dancing against a blue sky on water framed by the tree foreground. Life’s balance confirmed.

*Earth* – immediately my mind conjures up childhood memories of Mount Kaputar and the surrounding Western Plains of NSW, now part of Mount Kaput National Park. This area, the result of volcanic activity from around 17 to 21 million years ago, with its dramatic landscape of lava terraces, volcanic plugs and ring dykes is part of the traditional lands of the Kamilaroi people. It still cradles a vast number of plant communities including semi-arid woodlands, heaths and remnant rain-forests, plus animal species including bats, birds, wallabies and quolls.

*Fire* - hot, hot January, smell of smoke, dancing flames, crackling leaves as fire rushes up the slope devouring dry undergrowth – leaving behind ash, smoldering embers, weary firefighters and relieved residents - us.

Earth: Blooming

I’ve imaged “Blooming” from ‘Earth’.

I hope everywhere will be enriched by green on the Earth, and I wish there were plenty of buds would develop to numerous flowers!

I expressed it with standing out flower which is involved thin wire.

Fire: Firework

I’ve imaged “Firework” from ‘Fire’.
I’ve remembered my childhood when I had enjoyed seeing fireworks in summer holidays!

I expressed an exciting scene.

Water: Waterside

I’ve imaged “Waterside” from ‘Water’.

I believe the fertile waterside will be on the cheerful Earth!
I’ve made this scrumble from such my desire.

Air: Breath

I’ve imaged “Breath” from ‘Air’.
I intended to make a scrumble as if nobody awakes it.

Because ‘Air’ seems “Breath” that is silent and calm.
I used a favorite thread called Thai-silk, which is processed “sericin” and might be commonly unknown. That is thin, but has a tension.
