The Australian desert hides a myriad of colours and textures, some hidden in the subtleties of the landscape, others that demand to be noticed. This reversible shawl is representation of different types of Australian deserts in all seasons a culmination of its moods and brightness. A celebration of its life.

I live on the east coast of Australia - inland somewhat. Mostly we are struck by low rainfall however the Australian bush that I live in is still majestic in its muted browns and greens. Eucalyptus trees - tall, strong and uniquely Australian.

Beltane - a Gaelic May Day Festival, celebrates Mother Earth in full bloom.
It is a time when Mother Earth is fertile and abundant, half way between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice.

My free form piece applauds the flowers that Mother Earth brings forth. The fiery reds and oranges that I have used are symbolic of the fires that were lit in the rituals of the Celtic festival. The fires were deemed to have protective powers and were used to protect the cattle and crops, and also to encourage new growth from Mother Earth.

Techniques used: Free form crochet, hyperbolic crochet, stitching, plaiting, needle-felting, and fused felting.

I decided to make a bowl to satisfy two challenges.  Freeform and Empty Bowls, a charity serving the hungry in Houston.  The bowls made by artists are auctioned.

I believe Mother Earth (Nature) is every artists first inspiration.  I wanted to pay homage to the basics: the richness of soil, darks, mediums and lights; the multi-colors of the compost that creates the soil but also represents the multitude of flora and fauna.  Green for grasses and leaves. And of course aqua for life giving/sustaining water. With streaks of gold for blessed sunshine!!!

Free-form crochet and textured fibers allow much freedom in expression!

Mother Earth means so many things to me - fascinating place to live, home, playground, part of me and others around me, amazing animals, beautiful plants and plants for medicine, inspiration in sounds and colors, and textures, and shapes. I chose to use my favorite colors - jewel tones for this necklace. One of the things that Earth and freeform crochet have in common is organic free flowing forms. So I chose natural yarns and beads in rich earthy colors, and let my intuition guide me in crocheting it.
Can't wait to see, what others created.

For me the words "Mother Earth" always conjure up the peaceful beauty of the world as seen from space. The changing swirling clouds dancing over the surface of the planet lend liveliness and drama to the jewel tones of our oceans.
