You can FOLLOW this site to be notified of new posts etc. There is a box in the right hand column (FOLLOW US FOR UPDATES) that will notify you when new posts are posted here.

There is a 'comments' area at the bottom of each entry, so please leave a positive message for the artists to let them know that you like their work. Our fiber artists can reply to you there too.

The Annual Challenge

Every year we have a vote on what is going to be our inspiration theme for the next challenge.

The winning theme is announced on January 1st. and we then have a few months to design and create our free form fiberart piece for that theme.

The final photos are then collected and put into an online gallery and a published book.

All of the book sale profits are donated to the charity which has also been voted on by our members.

No one is allowed to show or share photos of their works until after the gallery has 'gone live' online and the book has been published.
This makes a very exciting show each year when everyone sees each others fiberart pieces for the very first time.

Edinburgh Castle

As soon as I saw this year's theme, I knew I had to do Edinburgh Castle, as it symbolizes home for me.  I was going to do a fireworks display in the night sky, as this brings back fond memories of both the Festival and Hogmanay, but my Mum shared a photo with me which made me change my mind.  It was of the laser rainbow beamed from the castle that lit up the sky in March.  I was unfortunately not able to travel home to see it, but I've always loved rainbows, so I was able to combine two of my favourite things.

I nuno felted the background, drew the castle on cotton, crocheted trees for the foreground (first time doing popcorn stitch) and used embroidery thread for the laser.  It came together nicely, even though I ended up doing the nuno felting twice because I wanted a black background for the trees instead of the navy I used the first time.

Hadleigh Castle

I am lucky to live near an old ruined castle which was built in 1215, and overlooks the landing grounds of Vikings from the 9th Century.  There are lovely views over the Thames Estuary, and the castle is also depicted in one of Constable's paintings.  It is now owned by English Heritage and is free and open to the public.  Many people come to the castle to enjoy leisure pursuits such as walking, kite flying and picnics.

I have photographed it during different seasons and times of day, and this Challenge has given me the perfect opportunity to depict it in yarn which I have often wanted to do.  I have used a combination of freeform crochet and freeform knitting.

Back to Nature

Buildings need maintainance, and will be reclaimed once they are abandoned. My piece was inspired by the tumbledown pigsty in my next door neighbour's cottage garden and includes crochet, surface crochet and embroidery. 

Materials used are fine yarns, embroidery threads, fabric and felt.

Tokyo Station

It has sent lots of trains, people and things to north, south, east and west. Also, it has welcomed them all, so it places in the center of Tokyo and the middle in Japan. It has looked a bit classic style, among the most modern buildings. It seems to hand down long time lots people's life as if it was a storyteller...

I used Tokyo Station building with the strong color wool yarns and the back buildings I did with the pale color lace yarns and cotton yarns, because the near objects would be seen clearly and the further away scene would be hazy.

Daydreams of Cityscapes

 

Cityscapes reflects my dream of living in the big city for a year. Tall buildings and lights fascinate me. 

Inspirations include The Shard and The Gherkin, both in London, and the Guggenheim in New York City. 

The purple building with its bright windows and rooftop garden is where I would live.

A peaceful walk above the city

This piece was inspired by a holiday exploring the gardens of New England many years ago.  I remember walking through a park outside Boston looking down on the city.  

Although inspired by Boston it doesn't represent the Boston skyline.
